The Casa Colorada (now the Santiago Museum) was built for Mateo de Toro Zambrano, 1st Count of La Conquista (1727-1811), a Chilean creole and the senior military figure in the Captaincy General of Chile, instigator of Chilean independence and briefly President of the First Government Junta in 1810, before his death the following year. The artist, a charismatic Chilean politician and diplomat himself, presumably painting a retardataire celebration of the Chilean hero at the gates of his home.
