Lot Essay

John Vertin (1844-1899) was born in Dobliče in present-day Slovenia. In 1863 he moved with his family to Michigan, where his father had already successfully worked as a merchant. The following year Vertin joined the Saint Francis de Sales Seminary in St. Francis, Wisconsin. After being ordained in Marquette, Michigan in 1866, the first ordination performed there, he served as pastor in various congregations throughout Michigan. In 1879 Vertin was appointed the third bishop of the Diocese of Sault Sainte Marie and Marquette by Pope Leo XIII.
