Lot Essay

Nearly identical versions of these two elaborate scenes—one of an Imperial audience and the other of court ladies seated in the pavilion of an Imperial garden—but smaller and on paper rather than canvas, were sold at Christie's, New York, 18 January 2017, lot 425. For a similar gouache on silk view of an Imperial audience, identified as Emperor Jiaqing and dating to 1810, see Carl Crossman, The China Trade, Export Paintings, Furniture, Silver and Other Objects, Princeton 1972, p. 96, no. 79. Also compare the very similar Imperial garden scene sold in Quai d' Orsay, Paris: An Apartment by Jacques Grange, Christie's, London, 19 November 2010, lot 515.
