The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This canvas is lined and secure on a keyed stretcher. Inspection in natural light shows discolored restoration along the extreme edges, most notably in the background at upper left. There is a loss measuring 2 inches length along the lower edge, in the bow on the sitter’s proper right sleeve. Small areas of discolored restoration are visible on the sitter’s proper right sleeve and on the bow on the sleeve. There is a vertical line of discolored restoration the chair to the right of the sitter’s shoulder, measuring 2 inches in length. Under ultraviolet light, the varnish fluoresces unevenly across the surface. There are broad areas of strengthening in the dark background. A vertical line of restoration can be seen in the background at right, measuring 7 inches in length. Restorations along the sitter’s hairline, in her proper right eyebrow, in the corner and lid of her proper left eye, and a few scattered pinpoint touches fluoresce green. The painting can be hung in its present state.
