Lot Essay

The enameled scene depicts Jupiter disguised as Diana seducing Callisto after a painting by Angelica Kauffman during her stay in Great Britain from 1766 to 1781. The image was then popularized through an engraving by Thomas Burke (1749-1815). The classic scene of seduction unusually features two women dressed in equally bright colors in an intimate consenting embrace; Jupiter is seen on the left with all of Diana’s attributes, though recognizable by his symbol, the eagle, standing behind him.
