The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is lined and secure on a keyed stretcher. Abrasion and associated restorations are visible along the extreme edges. The pigments of the green cloth draped over the sitter’s proper right arm have changed appearance over time. An area of discolored restoration is visible in the sitter’s forehead, and smaller touches of discolored restoration are scattered in her face. Further restoration can be seen in the shadows of the sitter’s hands. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals that the painting has been partially cleaned, with the varnish appearing opaque in some areas, especially in the background, and fluorescing over the sitter’s hair. There are broad areas of strengthening in the background, especially above the sitter’s proper left shoulder and in the red curtain at upper left. Further strokes of strengthening can be seen along some of the curls in the sitter’s hair, along the lace across her chest, in parts of the draped cloth, and in the dark tones of her proper left sleeve.
