Lot Essay

On August 2, 1891, while returning from a journey to the Far East, Tsesarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich, the future Nicholas II, stopped in Penza en route to St. Petersburg. The local newspaper Penza Provincial Gazette documented the visit in detail, including a list of gifts presented on that occasion. Among them was an album of views of Penza, presented by the Provincial Marshal of Nobility, which was very likely housed in the present portfolio (see Penza Provincial Gazette, 4 August 1891, no. 167, pp. 2-3).
