Lot Essay

This jadeite-mounted gold pill box is very much in the style of Cartier. In the early 20th century, Cartier often repurposed existing jadeite objects, such as beads, plaques, belt ornaments or pendants to incorporate them in new objects such as jewels, vanity cases and boxes to suit Art Deco tastes. This pill box, though unsigned, is likely made up from two halves of a pomander carved with traditional Chinese scenes.
