Lot Essay

An old handwritten label on the reverse of the canvas identifies the sitter: 'Ritratto della Sigra Marchesa Giuseppa Caccia Piani [sic.] / Morta 25 9bre 1809 anni 47 / Dipinto in Roma da Mr. Blanchard / era la moglie del Se [M...?]e / Carlo Emmane Caccia Piatti / virtuosissima'. ('Portrait of Signora Marchesa Giuseppa Caccia Piatti / Died 25 November 1809 aged 47 / Painted in Rome by Mr. Blanchard / she was the wife of Signore [Marchese?] Carlo Emmanuele Caccia Piatti / most virtuous'). Marchese Carlo Emmanuele and Marchesa Giuseppa Cacciapiatti were Italian nobility from Novaro in Piemonte. Their son, Giovanni Cacciapiatti (1751-1833), was appointed cardinal deacon in 1816 by Pope Pius VII, receiving the title of deacon of Santi Cosma e Damiano.
