The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting has been relined with glue. There is scuffing to the edges caused by the frame and there are a few areas of retouching visible in natural light. Examination under UV reveals a milky old varnish layer and places where the varnish has pooled in small spatters. There is an area of accretion on the varnish which has dripped on the left side, extending through the candelabra and into the wallpaper behind. There are two lines of inpainting visible, one measuring about eight inches within the wallpaper above the seated old woman, and another measuring about six inches in the wallpaper above the girl playing piano and the girl dancing. These have been carefully applied in thin lines. There is also an area of restoration in the blue border between these two figures where the color matching has become inconsistent. There are a few small retouches to the hair of the girl in the olive dress.
