The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is lined and secure on a keyed strainer. Inspection in natural light shows blanching in the varnish layer, most notably in the ground and over the sitter’s feet. Broad areas of strengthening can bee see in the dark background and ground. There are small stokes of restoration in the sitter’s white ruff, and a few small touches scattered in the sitter’s face. A line of restoration runs horizontally through the sitter’s legs, measuring 4 ¾ inches in length. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned restorations and further reveals touches of restoration scattered throughout the sitter’s clothing. An older varnish fluoresces over the sitter’s hat at lower left. The painting would benefit from cleaning and restoration.
