Lot Essay

This unusual style and shape of snuff box became very popular in the 1830s largely inspired by the designs of Claude-Aime Chenavard (1798-1838). Chenavard was one of the most influential French ornamentist who popularized historical motifs through his "Album" published in 1836 that included a large section dedicated to Moorish ornaments. He meticulously documented geometric interlacing, arabesques, and calligraphic patterns inspired by the Alhambra, and North African art, as well as Ottoman and Indian styles. His designs and "Album" served as a source of inspiration for artists and artisans throughout Europe.

Two comparable boxes made in Geneva, one signed ‘J. F. Bautte & Cie A Geneve,’ were sold from the Bayreuth Collection at Christie’s, Paris, 14 April 2025, lot 778, showing the European popularity of this style.
