The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is lined and secure on a keyed strainer. Some abrasion and corresponding restoration are visible along the extreme edges. A small round loss, likely from impact to the surface, can be see in the lion on the purse of the privy seal at left. There are small areas of discolored restoration in the sitter’s proper right cheek, cupids bow, mouth, and chin. There are further areas of discolored restoration visible, notably on the sitter’s proper left hand, below the buttons on the sitter’s gray waistcoat, on his proper left thigh, on his proper right knee, and small touches in the jacket at lower right. A small tear is visible at lower right. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an uneven varnish across the surface. Broad areas of strengthening are visible in the background and in the sitter’s jacket at lower right. Further inspection of additional campaigns is hindered by the uneven varnish. The painting can be hung in its present state.
