Lot Essay

This portrait is a workshop variant of Jean-Baptiste van Loo’s full-length depiction of Lord John Hervey, now at Ickworth House near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk (inv. no. 851778). The Ickworth painting, dated 1741, shows the seated Lord Hervey holding the purse of the Lord Privy Seal—a position he held from 1740 to 1742—beside a table with his hat and gloves, before a blue drape drawn back to reveal a shelf of books. Executed late in van Loo’s career, when his health was deteriorating, the Ickworth portrait was likely produced with assistance from his studio. Another studio variant, in the National Portrait Gallery, London (inv. no. NPG 167), places the sitter beside a table with an inkpot, a plan for a formal garden, and two books, set before a column.
