Lot Essay

The shape of this box is reminiscent of that used by Geneva goldsmiths for the colorful boxes made to be exported to the Chinese or Ottoman markets. However, the choice of ornament suggests this box was possibly intended for a European clientele which started visiting Switzerland with the expansion of railways across Europe during the second quarter of the 19th century wanting to bring back a souvenir.
