The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The painting presents well overall. The canvas has a glue lining and the varnish is clear. There is a diagonal surface scratch measuring 20 inches in the background at upper right, but it does not distract from the overall composition. Strengthening is visible in the figure's hair, beard, and eyes. There are two small repaired tears in the figure's chest, each measuring approximately 2 inches in length. A few further scattered retouches are visible in the sky and in the throne. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed some additional strengthening to the sitter's right shoulder and the calf of his crossed leg. The painting can be hung as is.
