A PAIR OF GEORGE II GILTWOOD TORCHERES
POSSIBLY NORTH EUROPEAN, AFTER THE DESIGN BY MATHIAS LOCK, CIRCA 1755
This wonderfully sculptural pair of torchères relates closely to a design by Matthias Lock published in A New Book Of Ornaments With Twelve Leaves in 1752 (see: V&A, acc. E.5057-1907). Matthias Lock, of Long Acre, London, was one of the outstanding carvers and designers in the rococo style, and was acclaimed by the upholder James Cullen as 'reputed the best draftsman in that way that had ever been in England'. The first of his several published works was issued in 1740, he collaborated with Henry Copland in 1752, and then apparently worked in some form of partnership with Thomas Chippendale. Many of Lock's designs, including furniture for Earl Poulet at Hinton House, Dorset, are preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and in the Metropolitan Museum, New York.

Beautiful model and especially lovely profile. With scattered chips, flakes, and losses the the gilding throughout, commensurate with age and use, revealing bare wood and possibly a previously polished earlier decorative scheme underneath in some places. A few scattered losses to carved extremities as to be expected. Both tops have restorations to the underside and some mild age cracking along the construction lines. There are a few restored old breaks to the legs and some signs of old inactive worm damage to the feet.
