Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has a glue lining and the varnish is slightly yellowed. Retouches in the sky are discolored, some of these follow the central stretcher bar, as seen in the catalogue image. Minor abrasions are visible at the extreme edges. A small restored hole, measuring less than 1 inch, and a repaired horizontal tear measuring 3 1/2 inches are visible in the sky at upper left and right respectively. At upper left, there is an area of restoration measuring approximately 3 inches over the left edge of the Union flag, and to a 1 inch area just below that flag. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the aforementioned restorations and some strengthening to the darkest tones of the water in the foreground. Additional inspection under ultraviolet light is hindered by a milky varnish. The painting can be hung in its present state.
