The canvas is unlined and stable on a keyed-stretcher. There is a wide craquelure across the surface. The varnish has yellowed somewhat, and is slightly cloudy in some areas. Areas of the ground have been left in reserve in the dog's white fur. There are minor abrasions and losses along the extreme edges, but these are usually hidden by the remit of the frame. There are a few unrestored pinpoint losses along the craquelure at lower right. The painting presents well and can be displayed as is.
