Lot Essay

Iris Apfel wore this Dior cape as part of an outfit styled for her collaboration with the Tate Modern, entitled "Iris Apfel Dresses for Matisse," wherein she created outfits from her closet inspired by favorite Matisse artworks.

In the Tate's video documentation of the project, Iris says, "I'm decked out in my very very vintage Dior cape, which is heavy as a horse blanket, but we have to suffer for our art."

Iris was also photographed wearing this Dior cape by Keith Major for her 2024 book Colorful, with possibly the same trousers and similar jewelry.
