Lot Essay

George Stavropoulos was known as a chiffon savant, producing couture and ready-to-wear garments inspired by classical Greek sculpture from the 1950s until his death in 1990. Gaining international acclaim for his expert draping and the weightless appearance of his chiffon dresses, Stavropoulos dressed clients from Lady Bird Johnson to Elizabeth Taylor and Barbra Streisand.
