This composition is inspired by the murals painted by Christophe Huet in 1737 to decorate the Grande Singerie in the Chateau de Chantilly, Chantilly, France. Singerie is the name given to humorous and satirical depictions of monkeys performing human acts, poking fun at man's foibles. This genre was especially fashionable in the 18th century.
