Lot Essay

'Collecting is like running around in a thunderstorm praying that you will be hit by lightning.
There was a print of this Brandt image at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in an otherwise unremarkable show. Shazaam! A moment like this is everything to a collector. You want to be able to grab someone, anyone, and share with them how thrilling you find the image.
It was almost two years before I found a print that I could buy. The photograph is of the French artist Jean Dubuffet and, yes, the eye is wide open. It took some thought on my part, but eventually it seemed clear, the journey was over. After thirty-five years of collecting, maybe I had found myself. My unconscious had been my guide. My eye was open.' – W.M. Hunt
