'Duane Michals is a poet in photography, a distiller of truths. People love him because he is direct. He hates any dissembling. He is the illuminated one. Philosophically, this image of an illuminated man is archetypal of the collection. It is about enlightenment. I like the way this photograph is uncluttered and formal: the subject in the middle of the frame, upright not horizontal. Keep it simple – and strange and amazing. When collectors know their taste and are able to articulate it, it is liberating. It makes the process of looking go faster when you can describe it; other eyes can be looking with you.' – W.M. Hunt
