ARAB REBELLION PRESS PHOTOGRAPHS

Large format photographs of the Arab Rebellion.

A group of 25 press photographs, dated 1936-1939, various sizes (largest 240 x 300 mm., most 180 x 130 mm., a few larger and smaller), most with typescript descriptions on versos, stamps and serial numbers of various British, American and French press agencies, few with Hebrew manuscript annotations on versos, one image of the Arab leader Fawzi al-Qawuqji mounted on card. (One photograph with 2 tape marks, rest with minor insignificant creasing.)

These good quality photographs range from 1936, where two images show rioting in Jaffa (one mis-labelled at 1929), while a number of others show the effect of trackside mines on the railways, with wrecked locomotives and rolling stock. Accompanying these are two images of the 'suicide car', an open-topped armoured car fitted to run on rails in front of a train in order to draw Arab insurgent fire and locate improvised explosive devices.

The British military effort is shown by an image of Bren Machine Gun Carriers rumbling through a Haifa street, troops firing at a sniper's position in the rooftops of Jerusalem, while one of the latest photographs dates from 19 May 1939, and shows a RAF Hawker biplane flying over Tel Aviv.

Other subjects include Palestine Police searching Arab suspects, and a number of the Arab leaders of the rebellion, including the Grand Mufti.
