THE END OF BRITISH RULE IN ADEN PRESS PHOTOGRAPHS

Rare photographs of the end of British rule in the Crown Colony of Aden

28 press photographs, dated 1962-1967, various sizes (most approx. 250 x 200 mm.), most with typescript descriptions on versos, stamps and serial numbers of American and British agencies. (Only a few images lightly creased at margins, one image more heavily creased.)

This interesting collection contains photographs of the end of British rule in the Crown Colony of Aden, annexed by the British in 1839. Some show the British army in barren, mountainous frontier posts while a greater number show the British engaged in urban anti-terrorist operations, some troops wearing riot gear, suppressing anti-British demonstrations. Three images show the British searching camel caravans and dhows for terrorist arms. Four pictures show United Nations negotiators in talks over Aden’s future, while another shows the British commander Brigadier J.B. Dye handing over command of the South Arabian army to Colonel Mohammed Ahmed Aulaqi.

5 images are reproductions of press photographs, but seemingly used by various media with various associated markings.
