SUEZ CRISIS PRESS PHOTOGRAPHS
Important collection of images, many focusing the Israeli Kadesh Operation in the Gaza Strip and Sinai peninsula.

44 press photographs, dated 1956-1957, various sizes (most approx. 180 x 230 mm., some larger and smaller), most with typescript descriptions on versos, stamps and serial numbers of mostly American press agencies. (Only a few images lightly creased at margins.)

An important group of images, with a small number showing the run-up to the conflict. These include two showing Nasser – one giving a speech ending martial law in Egypt, and another showing his reception in Cairo after his speech on 26 July 1956 in Alexandria nationalising the Suez Canal –an American journalist visiting the Gaza Strip in April 1956, Egyptian plane wreckage after an Egyptian-Israeli border skirmish in May 1956, and one of Egyptian troops on exercise from the same month. Five images show Israeli troops in Gaza, the Sinai peninsula, as well as lines of captured Egyptian PoWs and dead. Two images show Egyptian civilian wounded from Anglo-French air raids in Port Said being taken into hospital, while others shown the canal blocked at Port Said by scuttled ships. Alongside these are images UN meetings in New York, as well as the arrival of UN Peacekeeping troops from Colombia and Denmark in the Canal Zone. Post conflict images show residents of Gaza returning to their destroyed homes, demonstrations by Israelis against the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip and Aqaba, and Egyptian civilians celebrating the arrival of Egyptian troops into Port Said.

19 images are reproductions of press photographs, but seemingly used by various media with various associated markings.
