SUEZ CRISIS PRESS PHOTOGRAPHS

Images of the conflict that signified the end of Britain's role as one of the world's major powers.

52 press photographs, dated 1956-1957, various sizes (most approx. 180 x 230 mm., some larger and smaller), most with typescript descriptions on versos, stamps and serial numbers of American, British and French press agencies. (Only a few images lightly creased at margins, one image more heavily creased.)

14 photographs show the British military and naval build up and eventual action, including images of troops emplaning in Britain, the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean, and British troops on the streets of Port Said, two of which show soldiers inspecting captured Russian-made rocket launchers. Further images of Port Said show the devastation from Anglo-French air raids, with children scavenging tins of food dropped by looters dispersed by British troops, and a burns victim being tended by a nun in hospital. A post-conflict image from 1957 shows Egyptian officials inspecting reconstruction work in the city. 3 images show French troops with captured Egyptian PoWs. More unusual shots include: Egyptian officials checking cash held at the Suez Canal Company office in Port Said; photographs of American and Russian pilots training to navigate the Suez Canal; and two photographs of anti-war protests, one in front of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, West Germany, the other in Trafalgar Square, London.

26 images are reproductions of press photographs, but seemingly used by various media with various associated markings.
