BOLLAG, Alice (photographer, fl.1933).

Rare depictions of Jewish settlements in Palestine in 1933.

[Photograph album, Palestine, 1933.] 77 photographs (most approx. 43 x 60 mm.) many with manuscript annotations, mounted on 11 leaves, oblong 8vo (174 x 243 mm.). (3 photographs missing.) Original card covers, string tie (lightly rubbed).

In a year which saw large scale Arab rioting in Palestine due to the influx of Jewish immigrants trying to avoid persecution in Europe, these photographs offer rare insights into the lives of the Jews in Palestine, showing their classrooms, homes, gardens, and hobbies. Probably assembled during a tour of the holy land, the locations in this album include Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and Acre, but also Cyprus and Russia.
