BRITISH ARMY IN MANDATORY PALESTINE

Interesting album of photographs taken by a British soldier posted to the Middle East in 1943.

[Photograph album. Palestine: 1943.] 85 original photographs, of which 1 large format (approx. 84 x 134mm), the remainder mostly 65 x 90mm, with a few smaller, 16 leaves, oblong 4to (164 x 237mm) and a folded certificate of pilgrimage to the Holy Sepulchre at end, ink captions to photographs. Contemporary cloth-backed olive-wood decorative souvenir binder (extremities faintly rubbed, stitching fraying). The album contains more common photographs of the usual tourist sights of Cairo and Jerusalem, but there are rarer images of his unit at Abbassia, Egypt, and in Gaza, Palestine. 8 images show street life in Jaffa, while there are some particularly good images of the modernist architecture of Tel-Aviv. There are also 8 shots of Bethlehem. Some of the images are souvenir-trade photographs, and there are 2 images of Cape Town.
