EGYPTIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE – PALESTINE CAMPAIGN

Rare photographs of Palestine and North Africa in WWI.

[Photograph album, Palestine, c. 1916-1917.] 76 photographs or cartes des visites (most approx. 60 x 85 mm.) of Palestine, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria and elsewhere, many with manuscript annotations, mounted on 38 leaves, 4to (192 x 145 mm.). (4 photographs coming loose or loose, a few lightly spotted or with small tears to corners, several missing). Original quarter black cloth (lightly rubbed).

Assembled by a British serviceman in the Egyptian Expeditionary Force, this album has 9 photographs of Palestine including one superb shot of Turkish prisoners at Jerusalem station, and others showing Wilhelma, Gaza, and Ludd (Lydda). The majority of photographs show native villagers and merchants of various Middle Eastern nations visited by the British forces, as well as shots of military camps and camouflaged tents. Of special importance are two images of Algerian soldiers in Syria and one showing a group of Algerians hanged by the Turkish forces.
