PALESTINE – JAFFA RIOTS 1933

Ten images of the Jaffa riots of 1929

[Photograph album, Palestine, c.1934.] 87 photographs (from 68 x 45 mm. to 115 x 67 mm.), most with manuscript annotations, mounted on 24 leaves, oblong 8vo (160 x 243 mm.). (A few photographs coming loose from mounts, 1 manuscript label with minor loss). Contemporary card covers (extremities rubbed with a few chips).

RARE PHOTOGRAPHS OF PALESTINE COMPILED BY A BRITISH SERVICEMAN, including 10 of the Jaffa riots of 1933, here misdated 1929. Depicting the large crowds that had gathered in October 1933 to protest increasing Jewish immigration into Palestine, and their violent dispersion by the police, a number of these photographs are reproduced in Sarrouf’s Photographs of the demonstrations (1934, see lot 55). A further 16 photographs show scenes of Arab feasts across Palestine, including 1 which depicts the Palestine Police Force on horseback proceeding through a crowd. Some photographs show tourist sites throughout Palestine as well as Bedouin tents and people, with over half of the photographs seemingly taken by a British serviceman, probably a member of the Gordon Highlanders, as assumed from one photograph of a man in full regimental uniform. These pictures also include the Company embarking at Haifa in 1934 and a company trip to the Dead Sea.
160 x 243 x 20 mm.
