PRESENTATION IN THE TEMPLE, miniature on a leaf from an Antiphonal on vellum [Spain, possibly Toledo, second half 16th century]

A lavishly illuminated leaf from a gargantuan Spanish choirbook.

698 x 400mm. 5 lines of text and music on a 5-line stave, the text 'In nomine Jesu omne genu flectatur [...]' opening the Feast for the Sunday after the Octave of Christmas (some marginal staining and cockling, text a little smudged and faded, some losses of pigment to the robes). Framed.

The enormous format of this Antiphonal leaf is characteristic of Spanish choirbook production of the late 15th and 16th centuries.
