First edition in French of Forrest's account of his experiences in New Guinea and the East Indies, first published in English in 1779. Thomas Forrest, a navigator engaged in the new colony of Balambangan, was selected by the East India Company in 1774 to lead an expedition to New Guinea, with the objective of opening trade relations with the native people. The crew travelled from Borneo, through the Moluccas to the north coast of New Guinea, and then on to Mindanao, an island in the Philippines. A fine copy. Quarto (254 x 195mm). Half title, folding engraved map and 28 plates, some folding (2 quires very faintly stained in margin). Contemporary marbled calf, spine elaborately gilt with floral and foliate motifs, red morocco spine label. Provenance: Jean-Paul Morin (bookplate).
