PORCACCHI, Tomaso (1530-1585). L'Isole piu famose del Mondo. Venice: Simon Galignani and Girolamo Porro, 1576[colophon: Giorgio Angelieri and Simon Galignani de Karera, 1575].

Second edition, enlarged with 17 new maps. Porcacchi's ‘isolario’, originally published in 1572, presents elegant maps not only of Europe and the Mediterranean but also the New World. It includes a reduced version of Forlani’s important map of North America, as well as Temistitan (Mexico), Cuba, Spagnuola, the Moluccas, two new maps of Jamaica and San Giovanni, and two world maps, one a sea chart. Two variants in the edition have been observed, with no priority between them established; the present copy has p. 13, line 10 ending ‘mara’ and line 11 beginning ‘uigliosa’. Adams P-1905; Nordenskiold II, 187; Phillips Atlases 167; Sabin 64149; Shirley World 127-128 (world maps); Burden 42 (map of North America).

Folio (285 x 198mm). With final blank leaf, engraved architectural title, 47 half-page etched maps by G. Porro after Porcacchi, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, printer's device at end (some minor spotting, occasional small stain, creases in K3,4, pen trials in one margin). Old vellum (a few stains, new endpapers).
