The vessel is naturalistically modelled as a crab on an up-turned lotus leaf, with the hollow stalk forming the dropper and a small receptacle on the back of the crab forming the filler. It is covered with a glaze of creamy white tone.

Lot Essay

A water dropper of this form appears in the inventory of 1721 of the collection of Augustus II (1670-1733), Augustus the Strong, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony. A very similar water dropper of this rare form is illustrated by John Ayers, Blanc de Chine: Divine Images in Porcelain, China Institute Gallery, New York, 2002, exhibition cat. no. 7.; and another by P. J. Donnelly, Blanc de Chine, London, 1969, pl. XXXII B.
