Each piece is decorated en grisaille and gilt with the arms of Sichterman of Groningen showing a squirrel in profile eating a nut, among feathery foliage and surmounted by a coronet, within a du Paquier-style border. The service comprises a teapot and cover, a plate, a tea bowl, a coffee-cup, and three saucers.
The teapot 7 in. (17.8 cm.) wide, the plate 9 in. (22.7 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Jan Albert Sichterman (1692-1764), who was a Director of the Dutch East India Company and Governor of Bengal from 1734-1744. Dr. Jochem Kroes identifies four services with these arms. A plate of this service is illustrated in his publication: Dr. J. Kroes, Chinese Armorial Porcelain for the Dutch Market, Zwolle, 2007, p. 305, cat. no. 220.
