The lotus leaf-form cup is supported on a tall splayed foot and has an undulating rim. The exterior is carved with a leafy scroll and further detailed with combing. The interior is incised with radiating petals and the centre is applied with a moulded turtle. The vessel is covered overall with a pale sea-green glaze pooling in the recesses.

Lot Essay

It is unusual to find a turtle applied to the centre of a Longquan stemcup. Turtles are auspicious in Chinese art and symbolise longevity. A six-lobed Longquan bowl in the collection of the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco has a similar turtle to the centre of the interior, illustrated by He Li in , London, 1996, pp 174-175 and 202, no. 353.
