It is unusual to find a turtle applied to the centre of a Longquan stemcup. Turtles are auspicious in Chinese art and symbolise longevity. A six-lobed Longquan bowl in the collection of the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco has a similar turtle to the centre of the interior, illustrated by He Li in Chinese Ceramics: The New Standard Guide, London, 1996, pp 174-175 and 202, no. 353.
