Lot Essay

The image (oftentimes referred to as Church Door, Hornitos, California) was made during the first photographic workshop held in Yosemite, the U.S. Camera Photographic Forum of 1940, which was taught by Weston and Ansel Adams. By 1940, Hornitos had shrunk in population significantly, following its glorious years during the Gold Rush in the mid-19th century and would have been best described as a ‘ghost town’ at the time of this image. The door in the image is of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, built in 1862.

The present lot was originally given to the artist’s brother-in-law John Seaman in 1945, passed through the family, and was eventually included in the prestigious auction Edward Weston’s Gifts to His Sister in 2008. Other prints of this celebrated image are in museum collections including, The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Art Institute of Chicago; the George Eastman House, Rochester; and the J. Paul Getty Museum.
