The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Both canvases have new linings that remain structurally stable.
Both paintings have thick, even layers of rather cloudy, dull varnish with no obvious restoration visible from a viewing distance.
In each case, the paint layer appears strong and stable with drawing, wealth of detail and tonal balance well preserved. Both paintings have an even, stable pattern of craquelure and a loss of sharp clarity in the darkest areas.
Ultra-violet fluorescence examination:
Confirms the presence of thick aged varnish in the darkest passages with scattered relatively minor spots and strokes of restoration across the surface of each work.
