The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. The painting presents well in natural light, with the detail of the composition fully appreciable. In natural light some flattening of the paint surface, a result of the relining process, can be seen. In a raking light some scattered retouching can be seen, notably to the sky. Examination under UV light reveals quite extensive scattered retouching overall, with selective cleaning of the historic varnish. The paint remains stable.
