Lot Essay

The prime of the present painting was executed by Poussin in circa 1625. Commissioned by one of his most prominant patrons, the duc de Richelieu, it was then acquired from him in 1765 by Louis XIV and hung in the Château de Versailles. The painting is now in the Louvre, Paris (inv. 7296).
