Lot Essay

This model of cartonnier is twice illustrated in a Sormani catalogue entitled 'Cabinets de Travail'; stock number 2413, it is described as 'Cartonnier cintré satiné et violet, 35.5 cm. high'.

Although signed by Sormani, it was purchased by the present owner from the family of Jean Bieder, who was François Linke's contremaitre, and who had in turn bought it from Linke or his heirs. Another slightly larger example, also from the Bieder family, was sold from 'A Private Collection Volume II', Sotheby's, New York, 19 April 2007, lot 92.
