Though the sitter in this portrait has traditionally been identified as the great actor David Garrick, his physiognomy does not support this claim. The lines inscribed on the frame (lower centre) are taken from Act II, Scene I of Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost, spoken by Rosaline with reference to Lord Berowne.

The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. In natural light some discoloured scattered historic retouchings to the flesh tones can be seen. There is a line of paint that has slightly tented that runs horizontally across the sitter's throat. There is some slightly milky varnish. The painting would benefit from a light surface clean. Examination under UV light is confirms the aforementioned scattered retouching. There is a line of restoration that runs down the right side of the sitter's face, possibly a restored tear. An indepth reading is impaired by the milky varnish. The paint remains stable.
