The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. The painting presents well in natural light, with the modeling of the face and costume well preserved. There has been some flattening to the impasto as a result of the relining process. Examination under UV light shows minor scattered retouching to craquelure overall, with a more concentrated area in the lower left quadrant. There is evidence that an old varnish was selectively cleaned, notably from the sitter's face at some point in the past. The paint is stable.
