Lot Essay
This center table is based on an 18th Century model by the sculptor Jules Degoullons, designed for the Château de Bercy in 1713. Working with André and Mathieu Legoupil, Marin Bellan and Pierre Taupin, Degoullons was responsible for much of the carved furniture and paneling supplied to Charles-Henri II de Malon de Bercy, between 1712 and 1714. This table was purchased by Napoleon III at an auction of the contents of the château in 1860, and now resides in the Louvre (Mobilier National, 1901, OA 5049). This model was reproduced by a number of later makers, including François Linke between 1905 and 1910. One example of Linke's model was sold Christie's, New York, 24 May 1993, lot 338 from the collection of Elias Meyer at 16 Grosvenor Square in London, and can be seen illustrated in the residence in Christopher Payne, François Linke 1855-1946: The Belle Epoque of French Furniture, 2003, pp. 244-245. Further 19th and 20th Century examples sold at Christie's, New York, 7-8 February 2017, lot 332, and Sotheby's, New York, 17 October 2005, lot 600, and 20 April 2009, lot 39.

A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Structurally sound and ready to place. The marble top with scattered surface nicks and scratches, natural inclusions, and minor 'nibbling' to edges. A few larger chips to the edges, along with some minor areas of infill and previous restoration. The underside of the marble with a stamp, though illegible. Previously re-gilt, the giltwood with some scattered chips, losses to carving and gilt surfaces revealing gesso, bole and bare wood in areas as to be expected with age. The top with later pine slats and steel brackets to support the top. With typical minor signs of old wood worm, now inactive. Some visible shrinkage cracks along construction seams. One arm of the X-form stretcher restored. The crown to one side lacking central decoration. With further minor restored breaks throughout.
