Lot Essay
The design for this music stand is likely inspired by one executed in 1779 for Princess Kinsky's music salon in Paris by joiner Pierre Gontier, sculptor Gilles-Paul Cauvet, and gilder F. Mathon, and now in the Château de Versailles, illustrated in P. Arrizoli-Clémentel, Versailles, Furniture of the Royal Palace, Dijon, 2002, vol. II, p.237, cat. 83.

Overall in good condition. The giltwood with some scattered chips, losses to carving and gilt surfaces revealing gesso, bole and bare wood in areas as to be expected with age. With apparently artificial wood worm holes. Some minor separation at the joins. One rest reattached and with some associated glue residue. Both larger plaques slightly separating from the frame, one more so than the other, though secure. The socket for the central pole allowing the rest to rotate with some minor chipped losses. One lower swag reattached with a small section still lacking and associated glue residue. Lacking some small sections to the lower shelf. Good detail to carving. 153⁄4 in. (40 cm.) wide, 181⁄2 in. (47 cm.) deep, the rest
