Lot Essay

The design for this perfume burner is possibly based in part on a pair of chenet design by André-Charles Boulle, which have similarly formed bases with paw feet below curled acanthus, and feature figures supporting an urn. The design for these chenet is illustrated in H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen: Die Bronzearbeiten des Spätbarocok und Klassizismus, Klinkhart et Biermann, Munich, 1986, p. 500, fig. 23.
