Lot Essay

The decoration found on these cache-pot is done in Vernis Martin, a form of Japanning or imitation lacquer made popular by the Martin brothers Guillaume, Etienne-Simon, Robert, and Julien, all working in Paris in the mid to late 18th century. To achieve the look of more costly Chinese or Japanese lacquer, it is said that oil and copal were heated and then combined with Venetian turpentine.
