Lot Essay
The elaborately carved giltwood triton supports seen here are typical of the almost surreal imagination of Genoese sculptors and designers at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th centuries, such as Filippo Parodi and Domenico Piola. Similar rich carving depicting a sea-putto and dolphin can be found on a Genoese torchère sold in Le Gout Steinitz, Christie's, New York, 19 October 2007, lot 22. Further related Genoese carvings can be seen in a set of four reggitorcieri by Parodi of sea tritons and putti on rockwork in the Palazzo del Principe, Genoa.

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Overall in generally good condition. The later marble tops with some scattered surface nicks and scratches, natural inclusions, and minor 'nibbling' to edges. One with a repaired break to the front right corner with associated in-fill. Previously re-gilt, the giltwood with some scattered chips, losses to carving and gilt surfaces revealing gesso, bole and bare wood in areas as to be expected with age. The gesso and gilding cracking and lifting in some areas. One triton with more significant losses to the gilding to his back. Some separation cracks throughout, specifically to the back of one triton. One table with the left triton with one tail reattached, the right triton with one tail tip reattached. The other table with the left triton with one tail tip reattached. The central putto to both likely reattached. The top, frame, and feet likely later. The faux-marbling to the bases likely of a later date and with some areas of wear and loss.
