Fred Kelly (1891-1974) was born in Beaumont, California and attended the University of California, where he was selected to be a member of the 1912 US Olympic team for the 110m hurdles. At the Stockholm Olympics, Kelly won his preliminary heats before winning the final race in 15.1 seconds, only 0.1 seconds over fellow American James Wendell. Kelly would go on to serve in the Army in World War I, before becoming a pioneer of aviation, carrying mail for the Western Air Express and training further Army pilots during World War II.
